Subject: Application to Join as a Poet

    Dear

I hope this message finds you well.

My name is Ferhat Özkaya. I am a 35-year-old Turkish citizen with a degree in International Relations. I have a deep passion for poetry, and several of my works have been published in some of Turkey’s most established and respected literary magazines.

It would be a great honor for me to be considered as one of the poets representing your country. Should you find my application suitable, I would be delighted to contribute to your literary community.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

    Kind regards,
    Ferhat Özkaya

    Amid the Ruins

One day, your dreams slip away.
The chill of darkness settles over you.
    Birds are struck down,
    the sky bleeds.
Living becomes a throbbing, bloody toothache.
You long to leave it all behind—
    but solitude, organized and silent,
    follows close behind.

    To be without anyone—
    that’s the hardest part.
    It was past midnight
when everyone you loved abandoned you.
    Your first loves,
    your scraped-kneed childhood,
your youth that never caught up with life—
    all fell,
like the leaves of your tree of life.

    There comes a day
    when even breathing feels heavy.
    You withdraw from the crowds,
    your heart shivering deep within.
There’s no witness to your pain.
    The rocks turn to ice.
You bear the sorrow of morning on your back.

    On dewy branches, fledgling sparrows—
    they’re cold, like your heart.
    It’s hard to choose:
if you go, you’ll leave rubble for the birds.
If you stay, the cold gnaws at your hands.

The world has lost its balance.
Life has changed since you last left the house.
    People’s faces have changed.
The gardens where you once played
    have changed.

You left your memories on a battlefield.
The earth collapsed over and over on you.
    Accepting defeat
    burned your very flesh.
In the middle of an apocalypse
that has lasted a thousand years,
every direction is a bridge of judgment.

    But don’t lose your dreams—
    see, even now,
your children’s hands still smell of roses.
